The Klan targets the Lee family, beginning a string of terrorist attacks. While the Lees try to adjust to their new lives, an evil is stirring in Metropolis: the Ku Klux Klan. She's awkward, quiet, and self-conscious of how she looks different from the kids around her, so she sticks to watching people instead of talking to them. Tommy adjusts quickly to the fast pace of their new neighborhood, befriending Jimmy Olsen and joining the club baseball team, while his younger sister Roberta feels out of place when she fails to fit in with the neighborhood kids. Lee is eager to begin his new position at the Metropolis Health Department, his two kids, Roberta and Tommy, are more excited about being closer to the famous superhero Superman! The year is 1946, and the Lee family has moved from Chinatown to Downtown Metropolis. He Tweets compulsively about storytelling and comics as Comics Bookcase. The panel above is powerful both on its own visual merits as well as in the context of writer Gene Luen Yang and Gurihiru’s exploration of that past, which also ties into the present. It was one of the most popular pieces of media in the country at the time, and the show taking a stand against racism the way it did remains significant to this day. But moreover, this series is almost a historical record of Superman’s past of fighting bigotry and hate, incorporating the way his radio serial in the late ‘30s took on the Klan. It’s well-done from start to finish in all aspects, including scene-by-scene writing, the illustrations, and the plot. Since this three-part series started last year, it has been one of my favorite comics being published by DC Comics.
